Just this morning I received a text asking whether or not our faith is a 'blind faith' or if there are historical evidences for what we believe. I love those questions because it demonstrates to me believers who are actively thinking through their faith! And it is especially encouraging when the Lord allows the One Year Bible reading to answer the question! Today, Luke records for us Paul's time in Athens in Mars Hill (Acts 17). As Paul is preaching, he shares with his listeners that he has noticed they are quite religious and has even found an altar "to an unknown god." He then proceeds to share details with them about this 'unknown god'.
What Paul shares with his audience is that there is coming a day when God will judge the world in righteousness through Christ. And the next sentence in Paul's sermon is the answer to the question I had received this morning. It reads, "having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead." (Acts 17:31) While it certainly takes faith to believe what we read in the Scriptures, God has given us all the historical proof we need in raising Jesus, His Son, from the dead. Some began to scoff at these words and some still scoff at the resurrection but all must come to some conclusion. If Jesus did not rise from the dead, then He is not Who the Scripture says He is and we are still in our sin. But, if Christ is resurrected, then He is God and all will one day stand before Him as their Judge or their brother.
The resurrection demonstrates that everything He has said is true. Accordingly, Psalm 144 says He is our rock, our fortress, our stronghold, our shield, and our refuge! He can be trusted! "O Lord, what is man that you take knowledge of him? Or the son of man, that you think of him? man is a mere breath; his days are like a passing shadow.....[But] How blessed are the people whose God is the Lord!" (144:3-4....15b). Whatever you are facing in this day, run to the resurrected One and find the strength to face it!
