Prov. 22:17-19 Growing in the Word
17 Pay attention and turn your ear to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach, 18 for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips. 19 So that your trust may be in the Lord, I teach you today, even you.
We all want to be more of something. Some want to be taller or shorter, some want to be thinner or more athletic, others want to just be smarter or in my case just less forgetful. I personally have always wanted to be a really good guitar player, but have not YET achieved it. Some of those things are within our control and some are not, but the one thing that EVERYONE can control is their personal growth in Christ.
You know, the best thing we could ever do in our lives is to read God’s Word – the Bible. We can’t have the Word “ready on your lips, and “in your heart” as this proverb teaches us unless we take the time to learn God’s Word for ourselves. It’s filled with life-giving words of wisdom, discipline, strength, hope, and victory to help us become the people we are called to be. Proverbs 22:17-19 talks about how important meditating on God’s Word is for our daily lives; verse 17 even says “it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart”. As we prepare to start another Awana year at Church I always get excited about fresh starts. Seeing God use His Word in lives of our kids and leaders and seeing their desire each week to grow in their knowledge of the Savior by memorizing God’s Word through Awana always gives me hope for the generation coming behind us.
Another one of my favorite verses is Hebrews 4:12, it says, “For the Word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” It’s amazing how, when we really get in God’s Word (and not just skim a chapter per day), it really changes us for the better and prepares us for the challenges ahead.
Pray First Focus: Father, help me to learn to love Your Word and live to make Jesus known in my life today. Please make and grow me into the person that You created me to be through your life- changing Word. Help us create a love for the Scriptures as we encourage kids and parents to be faithful in hiding God’s Word in their hearts this year in Awana. We can’t use the Word in our lives unless we take the time to memorize, study and hide God’s Word in our hearts. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
