There are times in our lives when we get the feeling that there has to be more than this. More than this nine to five job that is wearing my back out, more than these student loans which are weighing me down, and more than this every day battle with the flesh that never seems to end. There must be more than this! I wonder if Adam ever asked that question when he lived in the Garden of Eden and walked with God in the cool of the day. Could there be anything more than this?

In Genesis 2:7, The LORD God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden to work it and to keep it.  Are you kidding me, to work and to keep! How many of you would be satisfied with this? I mean don’t most of us complain weekly about our jobs and wouldn’t we rather trade something in than keep it? But this was it; this was what God placed Adam in the garden to do.  To work is to labor in order to achieve a goal or, in Adam’s case, to produce fruit; to keep is to protect and to preserve, and don’t we all have these duties in our lives? Haven’t we all been given the same mandate?

 I am quite confident that the work in the garden was hard and that some days were really long, but it was never about the difficulty of the job or the length of the work day. It was and is always about the One we work for. Colossians 3 says that whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men. So this week when you are tempted to have a bad attitude about your job and the life that you are keeping, remember that you are doing it all for Him.
