Communion

Welcome to this important step along your child's Faith Path!

We partake in Communion in remembrance of the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross for forgiveness of our sins.

As Christians, Communion is a very meaningful and sacred part of our relationship with Jesus. The symbolism we find in taking the Lord's Supper is something that we need to begin teaching and showing our children when they are old enough to sit in big church. We recommend that they should begin by just watching and learning that Communion is something special and sacred, and that they understand the significance of it before you allow them to partake. Communion is something that should be explained ahead of time so that your child has an understanding of the meaning of it and the opportunity to ask questions. Children are intrigued by it, and if you are not intentional in teaching ahead of time, too often parents can fall into the trap of making the decision to allow their child to take Communion for the first time as it is being served. Without the explanation, the experience is lost on the child.

What the Bible Teaches

"And when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the
new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes." 1 Cor. 11:24-26

important lessons to share

  • After your child has become a Christian and you feel they are old enough to understand the symbolism of Communion, begin by teaching your child that we take Communion in remembrance of the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. We believe this understanding is paramount to receive the bread and the cup during Communion.

  • Second, teach your child to look inside their own heart before partaking in Communion so that they are certain to hold no unforgiveness towards anyone including themselves. Encourage them to confess their sin and ask God to give them a clean heart before partaking in the bread and drinking the cup, and that they will be given a few minutes of silence in the service to do so as the elements are being distributed.

  • Last, teach your child that the Lord's Supper is an intimate part of both worship and fellowship with Christ and His body of believers. We see Communion as an opportunity to stay intimately connected with Christ and the significance of His sacrifice on the Cross.

When children are taught to honor God and remember the sacrifice He made for us upon the Cross they are more likely to have faith to take God at His Word.

Communion is such a precious part of a Christian's life. By teaching and sharing your heart about this tender act of obedience and worship, we are giving our children the best insight they can possibly have on the subject. It is incredibly special partaking in Communion as a family and watching God work in the heart of those you love.

Make sure you record their first time taking Communion on their My Spiritual Development Tree. Download a pdf here or pick up one in the Faith@home Center at church.
