WISE WORDS

1: Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding. 2: I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching. 3: For I too was a son to my father, still tender, and cherished by my mother. 4: Then he taught me, and he said to me, ‘Take hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands, and you will live. 5: Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or turn away from them. 6: Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.
Proverbs has always been a special book for me. When I accepted Jesus as my Savior I was told to utilize this book for my quiet time. The reason for this was that there are 31 chapters, one for each day of the month.   I did this for over a year, along with studying Romans in the New Testament. It was truly a great time of learning and growth.
Proverbs 9:10 gives us a clear understanding of this passage. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”    So, when the father in this passage tells his son to listen to his instruction, pay attention and gain understanding, he is telling his son to learn all that he can about God and His words (the Bible), and do not forsake His teachings. Take hold of His words with all your heart, keep His commands, and you will live. Get wisdom, get understanding, do not forget His words or turn away from them. Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you, love her and she will watch over you. These are very wise words!
But, if you do not get into your Bible and learn what God has for you there, how can He and His words protect you and watch over you? He is there, available to you, reaching out to you, waiting for you to respond to Him. What a great God He is!
