AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A DISCIPLE "ON THE WAY"

In the Gospel of Luke, a pivotal moment occurs in 9:51 when Jesus "sets his face to go to Jerusalem." This marks a deliberate and determined turning point in his ministry. From this moment on, Jesus is focused on the path that leads to the cross, fully aware of the suffering that awaits him. The phrase emphasizes his unwavering commitment to fulfill his mission, not just as a teacher or miracle-worker, but as the suffering Messiah who will redeem humanity. This intentional movement toward Jerusalem underscores both his courage and his divine purpose.

As Jesus begins this journey, he immediately encounters several individuals who misunderstand or resist his mission. For example, in 9:52-61, he is rejected by a Samaritan village, and some potential followers there respond with half-hearted or misguided enthusiasm. They either delay their commitment or fail to grasp the cost of discipleship. Later, in 10:25-37, a lawyer also tests Jesus, seeking to justify himself rather than to truly understand Jesus or the kingdom of God. Although Jesus offers the parable of the Good Samaritan to illustrate neighborly love and the heart of the gospel, it is clear that many around him still struggle to comprehend the radical compassion and self-sacrifice that his mission entails.

In contrast to these misunderstandings, Mary in Luke 10:38-42 offers a rare moment of clarity and true discipleship. While her sister Martha is distracted by various household duties, Mary chooses to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to his teaching, showing a posture of humility, attentiveness, and devotion. Jesus affirms her choice, saying that she has chosen "the better part." Mary’s response reflects the heart of what Jesus has been calling for all along: not mere activity or religious duty, but a deep, personal reception of his word and presence. In Mary, we see a model disciple, one who understands who Jesus is and what it means to follow him.
