My Testimony
My Testimony
by Mike Lasco, Deacon
I was born May 28, 1965 in Rawlins, Wyoming into a very loving family. My father ran a beer and Pepsi distribution company serving the whole county (he also ran several other businesses: laundry mat, butcher shop, livestock feed store, and indoor riding arena). My mother was mostly a stay-at-home mom (she did bookkeeping for several of Dad’s business ventures). I had an older sister, a younger sister, and a younger brother. Rawlins is a town in southern Wyoming (setting at about 6700 ft elevation), so I have seen my fair share of cold weather. Probably the most (behind the scenes) influential person in my early years was my maternal grandmother, because she is the one who prayed me to salvation.
On June 8th, 1977, at the ripe old age of 12, I asked Jesus to be my savior in a back room of a First Baptist Church. My older sister had responded to an alter call and when she came out of the room, crying, I said I wanted what she got. Approximately a year later, I was baptized in the same church. Shortly after that, our church got a new pastor. Unbeknownst to most of the congregation, he was a spirit-filled believer. After teaching about the Holy Spirit, he was asked to leave the church. He did, and took about half the congregation with him and started a new church. My family went with the new church. My parents didn’t feel that being a beer salesman was a very good witness to our Christianity, so my Dad sold the beer business.
Because of my family’s professed Christianity, I didn’t have very many friends through junior high and high school. When I got to junior year in high school, I helped lead a youth Bible study with a friend, which only gave my peers more reason to dislike me.
