DISTRESSED, DEBTORS, & DISC0NTENTED
I remember as a child, an old stuffed green rocking chair that my dad would sit in occasionally. I would climb up in his lap and he’d rock me as we talked. Those days soon disappeared via his alcoholism and infidelity. I often wondered, did he stop loving me? Did I do something wrong? I found out years later that I became a part of the 1 Samuel 22 club of The Distressed, Debtors and Discontented.
It amazes me that like David, The LORD continues to put women in my life who are Distressed, Debtors, and Discontented. I suppose it takes one to know one. Those 400 men who lived in caves with David, became part of His Mighty Men.
It also blows me away that as I read through the Psalms, it’s like I am the one writing and talking to God. Could it be because God Himself is the One speaking through His God-Breathed Word directly to me, His daughter? Psalm 40:1-2b says, “I waited patiently for The LORD and He inclined to me and heard my cry. He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay.” What those 400 men saw in David was his heart for God.
I don’t like being in God’s waiting room, but He has me there quite frequently. I easily forget that while I’m waiting, God is working. Psalm 5:3. I find myself able to relate to the Distressed, Debtors, and Discontented, because I too have traveled their path. The Christian Walk can be hard and must be intentional. It is imperative that we not be lax in our walk. Peter says that our enemy goes about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Elisabeth Elliott has said that “our suffering is never for naught.” God always has a purpose. Why is it so hard to just keep our eyes on Jesus? As Distressed, Debtors, and Discontented, we focus too much on the miry clay than on Jesus. We have bodies racked in pain and sickness, wayward children, loss of employment, marital issues, financial issues, etc. which attempt to take over our thoughts. BUT GOD! Some of my favorite words. Isn’t being a child of God supposed to make life easier? Romans 8:17 says that we are called to suffering. So, we’ve been redeemed from the slave market of sin, to suffer. Ephesians 1 says we are chosen, redeemed, sealed (His forever) and on top of all, LAVISHED with HIS GRACE! How good is that?
“I would have despaired if I had not believed that I would see the goodness of The LORD in the land of the living. Wait for The LORD; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for The LORD.” Psalm 27:13-14. God is still looking for His 400 plus men, women and young people that He can make His Mighty Warriors. Will you step up to the plate, you Distressed, Debtors, and Discontented
