WHAT IS THE GREAT COMMANDMENT IN THE WORD OF GOD?

Matthew 22:37-40 "Jesus said to him, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, this is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets."

How do we love God with all the heart, soul, and with all the mind ? And our neighbor as ourselves? This can only happen to those who have come to understand that they have broken God's moral Law and stand condemned before a Holy God. By believing and receiving Jesus Christ as our personal Savior we begin our spiritual journey.

We first understand that God loved us so much that he died for us. John 15:13 states that "greater love has no man than the one who lays down his life for his friend." Once we understand what Jesus did for us we want to please him. In John 14:23-24 Jesus says "If a man loves me, he will keep my words. And my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that does not love me does not keep my sayings."

We love God when we obey his teachings. If we do not keep and obey his teachings, we do not love him. We love him by giving him our life. We learn to walk with him. We spend time with him in reading the word of God, spending time with him in prayer and the worship of our great God.

We reverence him because of who he is and for what he has done for us. He is the eternal God. He has given us eternal life. How blessed we are. We love our fellow man because he is made in the image of God. We love our fellow believers that are in the family of God. We are able to love in this way because the love of God has been shed abroad in our heart by the Holy Spirit

The golden rule says "We should do unto others as we would have them do unto us." "By this shall all men know that you are my disciple if you have love one for another." John 13:35 This simply means we treat others the way we want to be treated with kindness and respect and genuine love.

We love him because he first loved us. If you love God and love people you will walk with God. This is the great commandment of God. Blessings to all.
