THOUGHTS FROM PROVERBS

Proverbs 1:1-7
1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:

2 To know wisdom and instruction,
To discern the sayings of understanding,

3 To receive instruction in wise behavior,
Righteousness, justice, and integrity;

4 To give prudence to the naïve,
To the youth knowledge and discretion,

5 A wise person will hear and increase in learning,
And a person of understanding will acquire wise counsel,

6 To understand a proverb and a saying,
The words of the wise and their riddles.

7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
Fools despise wisdom and instruction.

I have been studying Proverbs and I came to an understanding of Proverbs 1:5, that is profound. Throughout Proverbs the wise person and the foolish person are compared to each other often. For example Proverbs 12:15 “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But a person who listens to advice is wise.” When I thought more on Proverbs 1:5 I came to a realization, a wise person is never finished being wise. While a foolish person will think they have arrived.

Now this may seem discouraging, because someday we want to be wise. I have envisioned in my old age, my children and grandchildren coming to me for wisdom. I will sit with them on the porch with a coffee and pour out all that I have learned in life. Now this is not a bad goal, but if old Jordan does get that wisdom, it would be folly to think I am done gaining wisdom. The very act of seeking wisdom is wise. You are never truly there, but choosing wisdom does make you wise.

Be encouraged that the journey is never over. There are more things that God can reveal to you. If you stumble and act foolishly, learn from those mistakes. We worship a God of mercy and grace, who wants to teach you. Those lessons can be hard, but necessary, to become a stronger Christian who can teach others.

Seek wisdom daily. The journey will not end until we leave this world and join our Father in Heaven. Merry Christmas and God bless.

Numbers 6:24-26
“The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord cause His face to shine on you, and be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His face to you, and give you peace.
