FULLY GOD AND FULLY MAN

The book of Hebrews is written to a body of believers that includes a few individuals that are considering returning to their Jewish religion and turning their backs on Jesus Christ. The author pleads with the hearers through a series of sermons to not drift, not turn their back, and not be sluggish in their faith. Comparing Jesus the Messiah, as superior to each of the components of the Jewish religion, we learn key lessons about our salvation that must never be compromised.

Hebrews 1:1-3 provides seven phrases that describe Jesus’ absolute deity, including: heir of all things, the conduit by which God made the world, the radiance of His glory, the exact representation of His nature, the one who upholds all things by His word, the one who makes purification for sins, and the one who sat down (after completing the work given to Him) at the right hand of the Majesty on high. The number seven is used in the Old Testament to represent the number of completeness. While the author could have used hundreds of phrases to describe Christ’s deity, using seven was telling us that Jesus is complete in His deity. The author followed this seven-fold description with seven examples from the Old Testament that reinforced his point. Jesus is God!

One chapter later (Hebrews 2:9-17) the author argues that Jesus is human, “made like His brothers and sisters in all things” [except a sin nature]. This Jesus was fully God and fully man! These two seemingly opposing facts are essential truths to Christianity. God, through the author of Hebrews, declares that “Jesus had to be human to make propitiation for the sins of the people [me and you].” Because Jesus is deity, co-eternal with the Father and the Holy Spirit, the Father says “He (God the Father) left nothing that is not subject to Him (Jesus).”

Salvation is by grace, through faith in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Your destiny with Him in heaven is absolutely secure because Jesus is God, and His Father, who loves Jesus and you, has placed all things under Jesus control. God who made everything loves you and Jesus, His only begotten Son, and the Holy Spirit loves you. Don’t look back, your future is too good to drift, reject, or ignore.
