My Testimony (Part 2)
by Mike Lasco, Deacon
Thanks to my loving Grandmother, I got to go to a weekend at Oral Roberts University for high school students to experience campus life and I was hooked. I got to experience a whole college campus full of Christians and it excited me. This was in late April of my senior year and I had made no previous plans to go to college. I had about 4 months to take my SAT test, fill out my application (including my pastor’s recommendation), get approved and receive notification that I had been approved, pack and move from Wyoming to Oklahoma. All of which did happen, by the grace of God.
I thrived in the Christian environment, made some great friends and had a good time, but found out I was not much of a studier. My parents were paying for my education and when my grades suffered, they recommended that I find a slightly less expensive place to continue my education. My sister and brother-in-law had begun attending Christ For the Nations Institute here in Dallas. I had visited them a few time during my third semester at ORU and decided to transfer to Dallas. After two years (and two summer sessions) at CFNI, I received my associate's degree in Practical Theology. I then spent a year in Jamaica helping start Caribbean Christ For the Nations and received a Missions Diploma.
While at CFNI here in Dallas, I was introduced to the most wonderful woman, both inside and out. We became instant best friends and hung out together almost all the time. In May, after getting back from Jamaica, I pursued a deeper relationship, and asked her to marry me. That began an almost two year, long distance engagement, because I still lived in Wyoming and she lived here in Dallas. We were receiving pressure from my Mom to get married right away and pressure from her Mom to wait. By God’s grace, we were able to withstand the pressure and got married in April of 1990.
