Praise God for His Sovereignty

by LaJeanne Williams, Women's Ministries Team

The Sovereign God is our reference point for truly understanding who God is.  When we know who God is, we do not refer to being lucky or say that the devil made me do it. We recognize that nothing happens without God planning or allowing it to bring him glory. I will talk about what the Bible says about the Sovereignty of God.

Are you weary, sad, downtrodden, broken, mistreated, or oppressed? Do you have a problem praising our Lord and God?  I have increasingly, over my lifetime, embraced God’s Sovereignty over everything and everyone -- believers and unbelievers. In other words, I have grown in my trust and peace with the knowledge that there is nothing that happens that the Lord our God does not know about beforehand or that surprises him. This allows me to praise Him in things that are not as I would like them, as well as in the joyful times when everything feels good.  Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you.” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  God is Omniscient (all knowing), possessing total and infinite knowledge of the past, the present, and the future. God knows each of us because he made us. Psalm 139:1 – 18 NIV

God is Omnipotent (He can do anything). Isaiah 40:25-26

God created the heavens, the earth, everything it, we are His creation, and were created to serve, worship, and praise Him in truth with a surrendered heart.  Matthew 10:29 -31 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. [a] 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

When I read the previous verse, I believe that I do not have to be afraid of anything including giving Him praise, glory and honor for choosing me to be his daughter. And as a widow, He is now my husband. Isaiah 54:5 “For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is his name” Sometimes, I am puzzled that some of my lifetime friends are slow to worship and praise God with their mouths. Are you one of those who refuse to open your mouths in Praise to your Maker?

Luke 19: 37-40 NIV— “When He came near the place where the road goes down to the Mount of Olives the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ‘Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!’ Some Pharisees in the crown said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” “I tell you”, Jesus replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”

I know who he is in my life. So, I am led to respond the Lord our God who provided Salvation for me through His precious Son, Jesus Christ.

Psalm 100:4, tells us to, “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.” Therefore, our God is worthy to be praised and to receive thank to him for all that he had done for us.

Isaiah 40: 25-27 NIV
25 “To whom will you compare me?
Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.
26 Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens:
    Who created all these?
He who brings out the starry host one by one
and calls forth each of them by name.
Because of his great power and mighty strength,
not one of them is missing.
He can do anything according to his sovereign will.”

And God is Omnipresent (he is everywhere).
Psalm 139:7-10 NIV
7 “Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.”

When I embraced the whole essence of God through these verses, he showed me that His Sovereignty rules over everything and everyone that he created. Therefore, I must respect his holiness, by giving Him the praise and worshipping Him with a true heart.   Coming before Him with humility as I recognize who He is and who I am not.  I am nothing without God.

When I wrapped my heart and mind around these truths by giving God the praise for who he is daily, living in this world of sin became much easier. My outward praise, with my mouth, in words, songs, Hymns, lifts Him up and bring me to lower position of humility before God.   In this position I can trust him for who He is and release my spirit from the worries of the world.  Many times, I spend more time in worship than petitioning God; for, he knows my heart and concerns.  God is my anchor, Psalm 6-19-20.  “We have hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.  He has become our high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”

Psalm 28:7
The Lord is my strength and my shield, my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.

John 14:27
“Peace, I leave to you, my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Again, we see the Lord has given us his peace.  Our hearts should not be troubled, and we should not be afraid when we embrace his Sovereignty.

Philippians 4:6 – 7 - 6 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

We all have experienced fear at one time or another. I believe that when I become fearful, I have taken my eyes off of the Savior, and started looking at people or the situation.  I have to remember God knows about what happen in my life before it happens. He is with me always.  Psalm 121 NIV says, “When I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”  Praise to our Lord for  he is near and he hears us when we call upon Him. When I praise the Lord God for his Sovereignty my spirit rejoices.  For, I acknowledge him as my only hope and my ever-present anchor.

May the Lord bless us as a body of believers with a desire to lean on him through his Word, by surrendering to God’s Sovereignty, and giving Him the praise and worship He deserves.
