DOING THE RIGHT THING
1 Chron. 15:1 - 16:36
This passage speaks of King David bringing the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. This is his second attempt. His first attempt ended in failure and death. Uzzah had put his hand on the ark to steady it when the oxen who were pulling the cart stumbled, and it says that, “The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah, and He struck him down because he had put his hand on the Ark.”(1 Chron. 13:10). David was angry at God for this death. Here he was trying to do a good thing by bringing the Ark up to Jerusalem so he could “ Inquire of the Lord” as they hadn’t done throughout Saul’s reign.
This time was different. David did it in the right way, the way God had commanded. The only way to move the Ark was to be on the shoulders of the Levites. This time he was successful. This time he had sought God and did it God’s way. He did it with music and dancing and praising. Everyone was pleased that the Ark was there, everyone but Michal, Saul’s daughter, David’s wife. She saw how David rejoiced and danced before the Lord and she, “Despised David in her heart.” (1 Chron. 15:29, 2 Samuel 6:16) this led her to having no children. ( 2 Samuel 6:23.)
David was eager and willing to do the right thing. He wanted the physical presence of God, who dwelt between the wings of the cherubim, above the mercy seat on the Ark of God, to be near him. He wanted the Ark to be in the capital city of the nation, close at hand, so God could be consulted at a moment's notice . What a way to run a country! But even though he did it the right way, he couldn’t make everyone happy.
Have you done that? Do you ever consider how you would want God to rule in your household? Have you ever had to make hard decisions knowing that not everyone would be happy? Did you ever take it to God first? God has the answers. He is sovereign. He is not only willing to have a relationship with you, but He is eager to do so. Like David, “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.” (Matthew 6:33).
Are you willing to do the hard thing, the right thing, the thing that could lead someone to despise you? David did and God blessed him for it.
