The nation Israel is the people of GOD. He chose Israel to make Himself known to the nations of the world. In the Holy scriptures we learn that GOD is Spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth. A spirit cannot be seen with the naked eye. So GOD used Israel as His visible vehicle to reveal Himself to the world. Israel as a nation had turned from serving and obeying GOD at this time as revealed in Judges chapter 6. Because of their disobedience, GOD sent other nations and tribes to chasten and bring hardship to the nation of Israel. Why? GOD judges His people who are disobedient. WHY? The purpose is to turn His people to repentance . GOD brings judgment for the purpose of bringing His people to cry out for mercy and forgiveness.

GOD chose Gideon to be the person who would lead Israel to victory over the Midianites. When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said to the angel, "I am the least of my family and my family is poor in Manasseh." The angel of the LORD said to him, "the LORD is with you, go in the might and power of the Lord. You will save Israel from the hand of the Midianites." GOD choses whomsoever He pleases to carry out His purpose. When called, our duty is to obey.

In a strange way only 300 men were chosen to bring about a great victory over the Midianites. Why? He chose only 300 to reveal that it was GOD who gave the victory. It was not the might and power of the nation but it was GOD who gave the victory. The glory and honor belongs to Him alone.

Disobedience brings GOD'S judgment. GOD'S judgment can be very painful. Obedience brings blessing and honor. Please don't forget this very important truth. After Gideon's victory over the Midianites, Israel had peace for twenty years. Obedience brings blessing. Disobedience brings judgment. May GOD give us wisdom to do what is right to avoid the judgment of GOD. Israel went through a vicious cycle of sin and rebellion, judgment, and revival. May GOD help us to learn from Israel's failure so that we do not repeat the same mistakes. May GOD help us to obey so that we can experience the blessing of GOD and escape His judgment.
