ARROWS
Psa. 127:3-5 - “Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, The fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them”! (EVS)
Ever take a shot at shooting a bow? It’s one of my favorite things to do at summer camp although, I must admit, hitting the target is always a big challenge. I don’t mean the bull’s eye… I just mean the target. Parenting is a lot like archery in that we have to pick up the bow and be intentional about getting better at it each day.
As the psalmist compares children to “arrows in the hand of a warrior” in verse 4 he gives us an image that we are in a battle and our kids can help us win. Every year at camp, we have one of our counselors come that is an expert archer. As a matter of a fact, he is one of top archers in the country. He told me one day as he was instructing the kids in archery that arrows must be balanced and crafted with great precision to make them go straight and at the target. It really does take careful precision and constant adjustments to get those arrows headed in the right direction. Sounds like parenting, doesn’t it? We are always recalculating and needing to make adjustments along the way to build character and Godly values into their lives.
One of the things that gets me up and excited every day is the opportunity to help parents enjoy the gifts God has given them. To come along side and give tools to help sharpen and develop skills for their quiver. Our target at our faith@home center at church is to come along side parents at each stage of family life. Our center and website is packed with ideas for each stage of parenting and wisdom from those who have already walked this journey. Children just don’t come with a training manual. Or do they? Sometimes parents and grandparents just need some practical help in understanding the steps that lie ahead. God’s Word sharpens our aim and helps us know the target each step of the way.
Psalm 127 tells us our kids are a heritage from the Lord, a reward, and evidence of His blessing in our lives. Let’s launch them well!
