SPIRITUAL BATTLE

Paul is writing to his faithful companion and fellow worker, Timothy, his son in the faith. He gives instruction to Timothy to faithfully teach other believers the truth that he had learned from Paul. He charged him to be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. Paul was the apostle to the Gentiles. He was the champion of the doctrine of the grace of GOD. The grace of GOD teaches that all men can be saved. Regardless of one's background anyone can be saved. Jew, Gentile, slave or free man or woman can be redeemed by faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Any one can be forgiven and accepted in Christ Jesus. He teaches him to be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

The charge was to teach other faithful men who could teach other men who could teach others also. Here we see the importance of teaching others so they could grow and and teach others. He was to endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. His ministry was pictured as that of a soldier in battle. We believers are in a spiritual battle with the forces of evil. The devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy. We must draw on the strength that comes from GOD'S grace to triumph over the evil one.

He teaches Timothy not to get entangled in the affairs of this life that he might please Him that had chosen him to be a soldier. He was teaching Timothy to focus on the ministry. Focus on teaching the word. Focus on reaching and discipling others. Don't let the affairs of this life keep you from being effective in ministry. I believe that is good advice for all of us. What can we learn from this passage? We are in a spiritual battle. We have a fierce enemy. We need GOD'S strength. Keep your focus on reaching others and help them to become disciple makers. "Live to make Jesus known."
