DON'T WORSHIP DUMB STUFF
I requested of my Nissan Juke that it turn all the traffic lights green so that I would not be delayed on my trip. I also have a special piece of jewelry that is quite costly which I asked to provide my evening meal on Friday. And since my health is a concern during this world-wide pandemic, I pleaded with my bank account to do whatever was necessary to ensure my health and safety. All of them were silent.
Today’s reading from the book of Psalms contains one of the most sobering revelations in the entire book of psalms...IMO. The psalmist records in verse 15-18, “The idols of the nations are but silver and gold, the work of man’s hands. They have mouths, but they do not speak; they have eyes, but they do not see; they have ears, but they do not hear, nor is there any breath at all in their mouths. Those who make them will be like them, Yes, everyone who trusts in them.” Trusting in idols of our own making is dangerous. Not simply because we are placing our trust in falsehood and fantasy. But also because if we fail to trust in the God Who sees, hears, speaks and answers, we will become LIKE the idols we trust.
We will be silenced. We will not perceive truth. We will not be heard from. We will die. The Only One worthy of our worship and trust is the One True God. This Christmas season, when the world is reeling from a virus, trust and worship the only God Who speaks, sees, hears and possesses life.....Jesus Christ our Lord.
