WHAT BATTLE DO WE FIGHT?

Rev 5:2-3 “And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?”  But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it.”

We are subtly reminded here that our God, the baby Jesus that we celebrate this Christmas season, is all powerful. In John’s vision, he writes about a scroll that no one has the power to open. No one on earth, or in heaven. Angels in the Bible are not weak creatures. They often cause fear when people encounter them. Yet not even they are powerful enough to open this scroll. There is only one, the Lamb of God who was sacrificed for our sins. He, and only He is capable of opening this scroll. At the end of this chapter, we are also reminded that “every created thing which is in heaven, or on the earth, or under the earth, or on the sea, and all the things in them” (v13) are praising and blessing God. That is not just those of us who end up in heaven with him. But all created things! Let’s remember who we are celebrating as we enter into the Christmas festivities this season.
