THE LEGS OF MAN

Today we read one of my favorite verses. Psalm 147:10 reads, “He does not delight in the strength of the horse; He does not take pleasure in the legs of a man.”  Psalm 147 is a psalm praising the Lord for His ability and strength and for His care for His creatures. God does not delight in things humans obsess about. He is not impressed with how many pounds you topped out on recently as you were finishing your leg presses. Who wins the Kentucky Derby is of no concern to Him. Even who won the Texas State high school football championships does not impress Him. He is so beyond in His ability it is beyond our ability to comprehend.

Psalm 147 speaks of Him giving rain for the earth and making grass grow on the side of mountains. The psalm goes on to speak of Him strengthened Jerusalem’s gates and given wheat to the sons of men. He commands and the earth responds….because He is the Sovereign Creator! But it isn’t only physical things the psalmist praises the Lord about…the writer also speaks of God healing the brokenhearted, binding up their wounds and gathering the outcasts. The Lord uses His strength to come to the aid of His children!

As we approach the dawn of 2023, remember that whatever you face this next year, the Lord’s strength is available to help you face it in a way that pleases Him. He cares about what falls across your path and wants to use all of that to conform you to the image of His Son. Do not step into 2023 alone…trying to do it on your own…trusting in how far your legs can carry you or your own strength can sustain you. You will not be able. But He is!
